Infertility is an ability to conceive after doing unprotected sex regularly. It can also refer to the biological inability of an individual to contribute to conception or can go to female who cannot carry the pregnancy to full term.

Some causes of male infertility
Abnormal sperm production or function– The abnormal production is due to various problems like undescended testicles, health problems like diabetes, genetic defects or infection like mumps. Even veins in the testes can also increase blood flow and heat which affect the number and shape of sperm.

Overexposure to certain environment factors– This is due to pesticides and other chemicals or to certain medications like anabolic steroids or marijuana. Besides, frequent exposure to heat like hot tubs or saunas or impairing sperm production.
Damage related to cancer and its treatment– It includes radiation or chemotherapy. Treatment for cancer can impair sperm production. Removal of one testicle due to cancer also may affect the male infertility.
Testicles– Testicles are responsible for producing and storing sperm. When they get damaged, they seriously affect the quality of your semen. Absence of sperm– Your testicles may produce sperm but may not reach your semen. The absence of sperm in your semen is known as obstructive azoospermia. It could be due to the blockage in one of the tiny tubes which make your reproductive system that have caused by an infection or surgery.
Alcohol– If you are drinking too much alcohol, then it can damage the quality of your sperm. It has been stated that if men drink three to four units of alcohol a day then their infertility will be affected. And if men drink more than this then it could make it difficult to conceive.
Sterilization– Vasectomy is the surgical procedure for male sterilization. It includes cutting and sealing off the vas deferens so that your semen will no longer contain any sperm. A vasectomy can be reversed but reversals are generally not very successful.
Ejaculation disorders– You will find some men who experience ejaculation problems and due to this, difficult can occur to ejaculate. Some other problems include retrograde ejaculation where semen is ejaculated into your bladder and premature ejaculation where ejaculation occurs very quickly.
Hypogonadism– It is an abnormally low level of testosterone, male sex hormone which is include in making sperm. It can be due to a tumour or by taking illegal drugs or klinefelter’s syndrome (rare genetic condition where man is born with an extra female chromosome).

- Sulfasalazine– This is an anti-inflammatory medicine use to treat condition like crohn’s disease and rheumatoid arthritis. This medicine can decrease the number of sperm but its effect is temporary.
- Chemotherapy– Medicines used in chemotherapy can sometimes strictly decrease sperm making.
- Herbal remedies– There are some herbal remedies like root extract of Tripterygium wilfordii that can affect the production of sperm or decrease the size of your testicles.
Risk factors of infertility
Infertility can have several risk factors for both male and female. They include:
Age– Men after reaching the age 40, they become less fertile compared to younger man. Even they have high chances of suffering from other diseases like cancers etc. Same is with women as when they reach the age 30, then fertility decreases and after age 37, it drops rapidly.
Alcohol use– Alcohol can really hamper a lot in men and women both. In men alcohol reduces sperm count and motility whereas in women, alcohol can increase the risk of birth defects. Especially when women want to become pregnant, they should avoid all such type of drinks.
Overweight– When men become overweight then their sperm count gets affected. Same in women as overweight increases the risk of infertility.
Prevention ways for infertility
However for men, there are several types of infertility which cannot be prevented but men can follow some ways to prevent from occurrence of such problem:
- Don’t take drugs and tobacco or drink alcohol as this can increase the risk of infertility
- Stay away from any environmental toxins because all these affect sperm production.
- Properly exercise your body because doing regular exercise improves sperm quality
- Don’t be in high temperatures as it can affect sperm production and motility.
- Limit the medications which impact fertility. Always talk to your doctor before taking any medicines
There are many men and women who have the problem of infertility. In women they cannot become pregnant because of infertility whereas men face problem in sperm production.
